The Challenge
This organization’s mission is clear, and its supporters are deeply committed. What the development team lacked was a clear view of what turns a first-time supporter into a lasting one, and a way to see whether the year was on track before the revenue arrived.
Three opportunities stood out:
- Too few first gifts became second gifts: The data showed that the step from a first gift to a second is the strongest sign a donor will stay, which made it the natural place to focus.
- A recurring giving base with room to grow: Monthly donors are the most predictable revenue an organization can build, and there was significant room to grow the monthly organizational donor community.
- Revenue visible only after it arrived: Without regular tracking of the activity that comes first, it was hard to know whether the team was building next year’s income or riding past momentum.

Our Approach
The Kipos Group serves as the organization’s fractional Chief Revenue Officer, giving the development team senior leadership and a clear operating rhythm without the cost of a full-time executive hire. Our work centered on five moves:
- Make the second gift a priority: Donor data showed that roughly 75% of second-time donors keep giving, compared with about 11% of first-time donors. We focused follow-up and stewardship on converting first gifts into second ones.
- Grow monthly giving: We built up the monthly organizational donor community as a core, predictable base of support.
- Measure what drives revenue: We set up monthly tracking of lead indicators (emails, engagement, content, website traffic, ad-grant spend) alongside outcomes such as new donors, second gifts, and recurring plans, and scaled the Google Ad Grant as a low-cost acquisition channel.
- Give every fundraiser a clear rhythm: Each major gift officer now has a defined portfolio, a target, and monthly expectations for meetings, conversations, and asks, so leadership can see the pipeline being built.
- Deepen the middle of the pyramid: We launched a dedicated mid-level giving program to steward donors who are ready for a closer relationship.
The Results
- A record year: Revenue closed at $6.7 million, the highest in the organization’s history.
- Second-time donors more than doubled: The number grew 110% year over year, a strong early sign of a healthier, stickier donor base.
- Monthly giving grew 62%: New monthly organizational donors rose 62% year over year, strengthening the recurring revenue the organization can plan around.
- Clear sight of the pipeline: For the first time, leadership can see the activity behind future revenue, not only the revenue itself, and manage accordingly.
What’s Next
With the second-gift and monthly-giving engines working, the organization is turning to the top of the funnel: growing first-time donor acquisition while keeping conversion strong. It is also investing in a dedicated foundations role, an area with significant untapped potential.
About The Kipos Group: We help nonprofits build private funding, from strategy and messaging to coaching and proposals, with a team of experienced practitioners who are still working inside mission-driven organizations.
